www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball returned to play Friday with a CUNYAC road twinbill against the John Jay College Bloodhounds (23-11, 7-1 CUNYAC), falling 12-2 and 8-0 from Cougar Softball Field on the campus of Kean University.
Game 1: John Jay 12, York 2 (5 Inn.)
- On the strength of three steals, four walks, three hit by pitches, and an RBI single from Rylea Sandel (3-for-3, 4 RBI, 2 R), John Jay took a 5-0 lead after the first inning.Â
- Faith Howes (1-for-2, R, SB) singled, stole a base, and later raced home off an error to put the Cardinals on the board in the second frame.Â
- Run scoring base knocks by Sidney Bankston (2-for-2, 2 RBI, R, SB) and Kayla Sauers helped extend the Bloodhounds' edge to six (7-1) after two innings.Â
- RBI doubles by Bankston and Jailene Santiago (1-for-2, 2 BB, 2 R, RBI) paced a three-run third period for John Jay to push the advantage to nine (10-1).
- Following a walk and two-out steal by York's Alicia Gumbs in the top of the fourth inning, Santiago (W, 10-4: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R (0 ER), 3 BB, 11 SO) struck out Andrea Wright to end the threat.
- Sandel's 2-RBI double in the fourth period gave the Bloodhounds a 12-1 margin.
- York's Sofia Soric doubled, stole third, and subsequently scored to finalize a 12-2 scoreline. This was Soric's team-leading fifth multi-hit game.
- Outside of the final score, John Jay maintained the advantage in hits (10-4), walks (7-3), and stolen bases (5-3).
- Remedios Garcia (L, 2-11: 4 IP, 10 H, 12 R (10) ER, 7 BB, SO) was tagged with the loss.
Game 2: John Jay 8, York 0Â (5 Inn.)
- With two outs in the first inning, Michelle Mancuso laced a single off Bloodhound starter Lindsay Ogden (W, 10-4: 5 IP, H, 0 BB, 11 SO).
- Ogden then retired the next 13 batters to pitch John Jay to victory. Â
- The Bloodhounds gave Ogden all the support she needed in the first frame as Garcia (L, 2-12: 4.1 IP, 0 H, 8 ER, BB, 2 SO) uncorked a wild pitch to advance Maleea Gallaspy (2-for-3, 2 R, 3 RBI) across home plate for the game-winning run. Â
- Ogden and Garcia both mowed down the opposing lineups in the second and third frames, with John Jay taking a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning.
- Utilizing five hits, one walk, and one hit by pitch, the Bloodhounds broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the fourth. An RBI single by Ciaran Iglesias (1-for-2, RBI, R), RBI single by Sandel (1-for-3, RBI), and a Gallaspy's 3-run double sparked the offensive barrage.
- Ogden got strikeouts of Gumbs and Madison Plaza to preserve a 7-0 edge heading into the bottom of the fifth.
- Kelly Fajardo (2-for-2, R, RBI) singled down the left field line to seal a 8-0 victory for John Jay.Â
- In the end, the Bloodhounds had the edge in hits (9-1) and stolen bases (3-0). Both teams played a clean game in the field while John Jay left three runners on base as opposed to York's on
