York College women's basketball accumulated a pair of conference laurels Thursday, as the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) released its 2024 All-Star Team awards. Junior Alicia Gumbs was named a second-team All-Star while classmate Madison Plaza earned a spot on the Sportsmanship Team.
Hailing from Queens, Gumbs received the keys to the program in her third season at York, culminating in her first All-Star appearance. In 19 games this season, Gumbs averaged 23.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.4 steals and shot 72.5 percent (132-of-182) from the free-throw line while playing a monstrous 39.8 minutes per game. A singular offensive force, Gumbs scored 57.8 percent of the team's points and accumulated 54.1 percent of the team's assists. Among CUNYAC competitors, the three-year veteran leads the conference in minutes per game and places highly in points per game (3rd), free-throw percentage (4th), rebounds per game (8th), assists per game (9th), and steals per game (10th). According to the NCAA Division III Statistical Rankings Summary, Gumbs leads the nation in minutes per game and ranks ninth in points per contest. Alongside her performances, Gumbs garnered one CUNYAC Players of the Week Honorable Mention and four Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Divisions II-III Honorable Mention selections this season. For the fourth straight season, York has garnered All-Star recognition with a total of six during that span.
Plaza played in all 19 games and averaged a tough 39.7 minutes per game in her third campaign with the women's basketball program. That minute count not only ranks second in the CUNYAC, but also second per the NCAA Division III Statistical Rankings Summary. Additionally, the guard averaged a career-best 8.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest. Improving every game, Plaza guard totaled six games of double-figure points, netting a career-best 17 points in a home bout to Medgar Evers College (Feb. 5).
