Brandon Barrett had a successful week awards-wise, winning the CUNYAC Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week and landing on the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Honorable Mention list for games played December 9-15. Barrett now has a pair of CUNYAC Weekly Rookie of the Week honors and received recognition from the MBWA for the first time. With this CUNYAC laurel, York has a multi-time men's basketball Rookie of the Week winner for the fourth time in the last seven seasons.
Continuing his strong performances, Barrett recorded a pair of double-doubles last week, averaging 23.0 points and 13.0 rebounds per game on a solid 59.4 percent (19-of-32) shooting. In a road encounter against SUNY Old Westbury (Dec. 10), the freshman netted a career-best 29 points (12-of-20 FG) and tied a career-high with 15 rebounds in a 93-83 defeat. Triumphing over Pratt Institute (Dec. 14) 84-82, Barrett tallied 17 points (7-of-12 FG) and hauled in a team-leading 11 boards.
Over nine contests this season, the Queens native leads the team with 13.7 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game on an efficient 55.3 percent (52-of-94) from the field. According to the CUNYAC leaderboard, Barrett is second in rebounds, third in blocks, and 11th in points per game. On a national scale, Barrett places highly in rebounds per game (17th), double-doubles (4, T-30th), and blocks per game (T-82nd).
