@yorkcardinals Women’s Volleyball concludes 2024 slate at Sarah Lawrence

York College matched its wins total from a year ago under second-year head coach Mario Tang

BRONXVILLE, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball finalized their 2024 slate Thursday evening in a non-conference road affair against the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons (16-8), falling in straight sets (25-6, 25-8, 25-7) from Campbell Sports Center in Bronxville. 

First Set Breakdown
  • With Georgi Massey on the opening serve for the Gryphons, Sarah Lawrence blitzed York with a 14-0 start.
  • A pair of kills by Madison Plaza got the Cardinals on the board at 15-2.
  • Leading 19-6, four aces from Sarah Lawrence's Athena Kazos sealed a 25-6 result.
Second Set Breakdown
  • Alicia Gumbs' smackdown pushed York in front early with a 2-0 lead.
  • Playing even, both squads were knotted at six after 12 points.
  • Following a Sarah Lawrence service error which made it 12-8, the Gryphons did put the pedal to the medal, claiming the following 13 points to triumph 25-8.
Third Set Breakdown
  • Five kills by Sarah Lawrence kickstarted a 6-0 opening.
  • The Gryphons continued their control, going on a 11-1 burst to lead 17-1.
  • York responded with a mini 5-2 spurt helped by a pair of kills from Gumbs, trimming the deficit to 13 (19-6).
  • Four combined kills from Kazos and Jenna Lehnhart closed out a 25-7 result. 
Leading the Cardinals For Sarah Lawrence
  • Nikolet Vataj powered down a match-high 14 kills to go along with five aces.
  • Kazos produced 11 kills and served up five aces as well.
  • Massey had an all-around performance of three kills, five aces, 11 assists, and a match-best eight digs.
  • Ava Castro-Devarona dimed up 15 assists.

York hit .000 on 46 attacks, while Sarah Lawrence attacked at a .464 rate on 69 attempts. Additionally, the Gryphons controlled the battle in points (61-8), kills (38-7), aces (23-0), assists (34-6), and digs (30-24).

The Cardinals (2-17) graduate a senior class of four and will continue to build the program for the 2025 under second-year head coach Mario Tang.
