Aidony Nivar was recognized Monday as the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week for games played January 1-7. With this distinction, Nivar is York's first honoree to claim four CUNYAC Rookie of the Week selections since Omari Phipps generated five during the 2007-08 campaign.
Nivar poured in two double-digit scoring outbursts for the Cardinals last week, averaging 19.5 points, 5.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game while connecting on 56 percent (14-of-25) from the field, 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from 3-point range and 100 percent (5-of-5) from the fre-throw line. Battling John Jay College (Jan. 3), Nivar posted a team-high 17 points (7-13 FG, 3-of-6 3FG), to go along with six dimes, three steals, and a career-high two blocks. In an 88-75 home triumph versus Medgar Evers College (Jan. 5), the Dominican Republic native dropped a career-best 22 points (7-of-12 FG, 3-of-5 3FG, 5-of-5 FT), while also grabbing four rebounds and recording four assists.
In 13 contests, Nivar is averaging 12.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 43.3 percent (61-of-141) from the floor and a scorching 37.2 percent (32-of-86) from downtown on over six attempts per game.
According to the CUNYAC hierarchy, the rookie is 5th in steals, 13th in points, and 16th in assists per game. Nivar's 3-point shooting ranks third in the conference. Among York players, Nivar is first in steals, second in points, third in rebounds, and fourth in assists per game.
