Aidony Nivar was recognized Tuesday as the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week for games played January 8-14. With this distinction, Nivar ties Omari Phipps' record of five CUNYAC Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week selections that was previously achieved during the 2007-08 campaign.
In two CUNYAC games last week, Nivar averaged 16.5 points and 1.5 steals while hitting on 42.3 percent (11-of-26) from the field, 50 percent (8-of-16) from 3-point range and 100 percent (3-of-3) from the free-throw line.
After netting five points in a loss against City College of New York (Jan. 10), Nivar responded with a scoring outburst at home versus Brooklyn College (Jan. 12). In 37 minutes of action, Nivar poured in a career-best 28 points (9-of-17 FG, 7-of-12 3FG, 3-of-3 FT) and recorded two steals in a tough 70-67 home defeat.
On the season the five-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week is averaging 13.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.8 steals across 15 games. Nivar also shoots 43.1 percent (72-of-167) from the floor and a scorching 39.2 percent (40-of-102) from 3-point territory on over 6.8 attempts per game.
Among York players, Nivar is first in steals, second in points, fourth in rebounds, and fourth in assists per game. According to the CUNYAC hierarchy, he is 4th in steals, 10th in points, and is tied for 19th in assists per game. The rookie places second in the conference in 3-point shooting and 57th among all Division III players.
