www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball opened the 2023 campaign Wednesday evening, falling in straight sets (25-16, 25-14, 25-4) to the Maritime College Privateers (1-0) in a non-conference matchup from Reisenberg Gymnasium.
"Shamonie Miller and Alicia Gumbs led our charge with solid defense. Cherub Autar had a strong performance setting and distributing the ball to Nadaysia Nivar. Andrea Wright played aggressively at the net. We are an up and coming team with a lot of positive energy and with a few more practices we will start to gel as a team."-said head coach Mario Tang
How it Happened
- The Privateers jumped out to a quick 7-1 first-set lead.
- York closed the gap to 10-7 following two straight aces from Madison Plaza.
- Trailing 15-9, a 5-1 charge from the Cardinals cut the score to 16-14.
- Maritime finished the set on a 9-2 run, capped off by five consecutive points on Victoria Cordero's serve.
- The Cardinals claimed the first two points of the second stanza.
- Five unanswered points from the Privateers gave them a 5-2 edge.
- Leading 11-7, a 9-3 burst punctuated by a Cordero ace pushed Maritime's lead to 20-10. The Privateers won five of the next nine points to claim the second set.
- An ace by Alicia Gumbs gave York a 1-0 start in the third frame.
- York maintained a deficit of 4-3, the closest they stood in the set.
- The Privateers mounted a 21-1 burst to close out the match.
Leading the Cardinals
- Shamonie Miller paced York with team-bests in points (4), kills (4), and total attacks (19). The senior also totaled three digs.
- Nadaysia Nivar chipped in with two kills and three digs.
- Cherub Autar tallied two kills and contributed a team-high four assists and four digs.
- Gumbs served a team-leading three aces in her York volleyball debut.
- Plaza added two aces in her debut.
For Maritime
- Jessica Mele finished with game-highs in points (11), kills (6), aces (5), and digs (7) to lead the Privateers.
- Ashley Pavarani followed with five kills, three aces, and 10 assists.
- Erica Pagano matched Pavarani with 10 assists to go along with two kills and two aces.
- Diana Rodriguez and Olivia Banach each recorded four points while Cordero tallied three.
Inside the Box Score
- York attacked at a rate of -.190 while the Privateers hit .200. Maritime held the advantage in kills (20-9), aces (18-5), assists (20-8), and digs (16-12).
