@yorkcardinals Softball battles Lehman in season finale

York College closed out its 2023 season versus Lehman College

BRONX --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball closed out the 2023 campaign Thursday with a trio of non-conference games against the Lehman College Lightning (11-16) from South Field. The Cardinals scored nine runs in the opener as part of a 24-9 setback before falling 16-4 in game two.  The finale went away from York as the Lightning struck with a 21-9 triumph. 

Game 1: Lehman 24, York 9 (5 Inn.)
  • Lehman jumped ahead early with a nine-run opening inning, capitalizing on nine Cardinal errors.
  • York answered in the first with a two out score as Lissenny Florentino crossed home plate on a wild pitch to put the Cardinals on the board.
  • After Lehman increased its lead to 15-1, York took advantage of a wild pitch in the second to send Andrea Wright (1-for-2, 2 RBI, 2 R) in for the score.
  • Trailing 17-2, the Cardinals scored seven runs in the third stanza.  Wright singled to drive in two before scoring on a wild pitch.  York then advanced four runners home on bases loaded walks. 
  • The Cardinals' seven-run frame was one run shy of their season-high of eight runs in the third inning against Yeshiva University (Mar. 19).
  • Lehman added three more runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to seal the 24-9 final.
  • The Lightning outplayed York in hits (13-1) and stolen bases (10-5) while stranding seven Cardinals on base.  Both teams drew even in walks (14-14).  
  • Sofia Soric (L, 1-15; 5 IP, 13 H, 14 ER, 14 BB) went the distance for the 12 time this season in defeat for York as Kaycee Isley (W, 1-1; 2.1 IP, H, 4 ER, 8 BB, 4 SO) claimed victory for Lehman.
Game 2: Lehman 12, York 4 (5 Inn.)
  • Lehman got off to a strong start in game two, scoring four in the first and tacked on eight more in the second to take a commanding 12-0 lead on Shamonie Miller (L, 0-1; 5 IP, 11 H, 11 ER, 9 BB).
  • Miller drew a leadoff walk in the first and then stole second and third base before Samantha Nazar (W, 8-14; 5 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 7 SO)  got Soric to line into an inning ending double play.
  • York replied in the third, producing three runs on three hits, including a three-run triple by Florentino (2-for-3, 3 RBI) to drive in Madison Plaza, Alicia Gumbs and Melanie Guerrero.   
  • The Cardinals matched Lehman with a one-run fourth to make it a 13-4 game.  Tyler Dazey sent a double down the right field line to score Wright for York's final run.
  • In the fifth, three costly errors added to a three-run inning for Lehman to settle the 16-4 final.  
  • York compiled five hits while Lehman finished with the edge in hits (11-5), stolen bases (9-2)
  • On the basepath, Lehman stranded four runners compared to York's two.  Defensively, York committed four errors while Lehman had one.
Game 3: Lehman 21, York 9 (6 Inn.)
  • The Lightning broke the scoring ice in the first inning helped by Andrea Alarcon's baserunning to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Lehman scored four more in the second while York answered with Nayelly Rojas crossing the plate to make it a 5-1 game.
  • A two-run dinger by Nidia Nelson was part of a nine-run third by the Lightning, extending their edge to 14-1.
  • Miller (L, 0-2; 5 IP, 12 H, 4 BB, 15 R, (11 ER), 2 SO) tossed a scoreless fourth for York as the Cardinals then manufactured three runs to make it a 14-4 game.
  • Lehman added an insurance run in the fifth to push its edge to 15-4.
  • York put together a five-run fifth highlighted by a two run base knock from Rojas to move the game into the sixth.
  • Lehman put the game out of reach with six runs in the sixth to build a 21-9 advantage. 
  • Nazar (W, 9-14; 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 9 SO) pitched the Lightning to victory.
  • Miller accounted for two of York's five stolen bases.  
  • Overall, Lehman had the advantage in hits (15-3) and stolen bases (12-5), while the Cardinals drew more walks (10-7).
The Cardinals graduate a senior class of one as Miller concludes her four-year career as the program's single-season leader with 27 stolen bases during the 2023 season.
