www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's volleyball closed out the 2023 season at home Thursday evening with a non-conference doubleheader against the City College of New York Beavers (16-17). The Cardinals (0-17) challenged CCNY, but were outlasted in straight sets in both the opening match (25-10, 25-11, 25-9) and the finale (25-12, 25-6, 25-8) inside York College Gymnasium.
Match 1: CCNY 3, York 0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-9)
How it Happened
- Austinson Cooke's prodigious net play gave York an early 3-2 lead.
- Level at five, CCNY won six-consecutive points to take an 11-6 lead.
- Ahead 12-7, the Beavers ended the first set on a 13-3 spurt.
- A competitive early second frame, a Beaver service error made it 6-5 CCNY.
- Leading 12-8, the Beavers pulled away to win 25-11 on the strength of eight kills.
- A quick flurry helped the Beavers lead 12-3 in the third stanza.
- Leading 13-5, an 8-1 burst for CCNY essentially sealed the match.
- The Beavers closed out the contest after an ace from Soterios Homenides.

- Ethan Sherpa had a match-best 11 points, which included six aces and five kills.
- Homenides added a match-high seven aces.

How it Happened

- The Cardinals responded with a 6-0 charge to cut the deficit to one.
- A 10-2 burst pushed the Beavers' lead to 17-8.
- Two kills from Stuart made the score 18-10.
- Alex Winter served an ace for York to cut CCNY's lead to 24-12 before the Beavers sealed the set.
- The Beavers began the second frame with an 8-1 advantage.
- A 6-1 burst for CCNY made the score 14-2.
- Both teams played the next six points even after a kill from Campbell, making the score 17-5
- CCNY won eight of the following nine points to win the second frame.
Buoyed by the serves of Galvez and Jeffrey Celis, the Beavers bolted out the gates with a 13-2 third-set lead.
- Trailing 21-4, the Cardinals claimed four of the following six points, before Reyes served out the match for CCNY.
