www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball travel Friday evening to compete in the Stevenson University Tip-Off Classic, producing a trio of double-digit scorers in a 95-72 non-conference setback to the host Mustangs (2-1) inside Owings Mills Gymnasium.
How it Happened
- Leading for the early portion of the first half, Stevenson took a 19-12 advantage when Mason Jones converted a three-point play at the 11:10 mark.
- Responding on the defensive end, the Cardinals went on a 9-1 run to take a 21-20 lead with 6:59 remaining in the half.
- Trading baskets, two free throws from Tafari Jerome gave York a 32-28 edge with 2:16 showing on the clock.
- The Mustangs closed the period on an 11-4 run, a long triple by Lutz with one second left made the score 41-36 at the break.
- The Cardinals struggled to keep pace with a sharp-shooting Mustang squad that canned nine 3-pointers in the second half.
- York twice pulled within seven in the opening 1:49 and were unable to push past that mark as Stevenson went on a 14-5 scoring spree to maintain a double-digit lead for the remaining 12:43.
- Playing ahead for the final 21:04, Stevenson stretched its lead to as many as 27 points (87-70) with 4:34 remaining in the game.
Leading the Cardinals
- Aidony Nivar registered a career-high 17 points (6-of-12 FG, 4-of-8 3FG) and three steals to pace York.
- Olawale Kila notched his 10th-career double-double (first of season) by dropping 12 points and 11 rebounds.
- Jerome sparked York off the bench with 10 points (4-of-4 FT).
- In the paint, Micaiah Goosby tallied nine points while Austinson Cooke hit on 2-of-2 from the field and 4-of-4 from the stripe to net a career-high eight points.
- Kavon Brereton debuted with six points (3-of-3 FG) in four minutes to close out the game.
For Stevenson
- Lutz led the way for Stevenson with 22 points (7-of-9 FG, 6-of-8 3FG) in 16 minutes of action.
- Ronald Ayres netted 17 points (6-of-12 FG, 4-of-8 3FG).
- Jones chipped in with 13 points (4-of-4 FG, 4-of-5 FT) to go along with three rebounds and three assists.
- Cameron Sapienza contributed a team-high six rebounds and five dimes.
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals shot 39.3 percent (32-of-66) from the field, 17.4 percent (4-of-23) from behind the arc and 66.7 percent (20-of-30) from the free-throw line. Stevenson connected on 48.5 percent (32-of-66) from the floor, 29.6 percent (14-of-33) from downtown and 77.3 percent (17-of-22) from the charity stripe.
York owned the edge on the glass (38-37), in steals (10-8) and in fast break scoring (13-12), while Stevenson controlled the assist battle (22-18). Additionally, the Mustangs finished with the advantage in second-chance points (15-10) and points off turnovers (21-17).
