York College returns to the court Saturday (Nov. 18) for a non-conference bout at SUNY Old Westbury

MAHWAH, NJ --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball opened the 2023-24 campaign Wednesday evening under first-year head coach Jason Marshall against the Ramapo College Roadrunners (2-1). The Cardinals fell behind early and were unable to recover in a 103-29 non-conference setback.  

How it Happened
  • Ramapo jumped ahead by scoring the game's opening 26 points until Alicia Gumbs sank a free-throw to put York on the board with one minute remaining in the first quarter.  
  • After shooting 0-for-9 from the field in the opening stanza, York sank 6-of-14 to put 17 points over the next 10 minutes.
  • York went on a 10-2 run as Gumbs poured in nine of her 12 second- quarter points to chop the deficit to 28 (43-15).
  • Trailing 53-18 at the break, Nadaysia Nivar opened the third-quarter scoring for York with a jumper as four different Cardinals netted points in the stanza, capped by Simone Robinson's 3-pointer.
  • Tamicia Sylvester drained a pair of free-throws in the final period to close the scoring for York.

Inside the Box Score
Gumbs paced York with team-highs of 15 points (5-of-7 FT), seven rebounds (three offensive) and three assists.  Madison Plaza scored five of her seven points in the second quarter and added six rebounds to her stat line. Sylvester recorded the Cardinals' lone block

Ramapo's Alison Ahern netted a game-high 26 points (13-of-20 FG) to go along with nine rebounds and three assists. Lauren Flatt dropped a highly efficient 25 points (9-of-12 FG, 4-of-5 3FG, 3-of-4 FT) and blocked two shots. Brianna Michael Carter recorded 12 points (6-of-14 FG) and six dimes. Daria Pontone stuffed the stat sheet with nine boards, five assists and a game-best five steals. 

The Cardinals shot 21.7 percent (10-of-46) from the field, 8.3 percent (1-of-12) from beyond the arc and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from the free-throw line. The Roadrunners connected on 59.2 percent (45-of-76) from the floor, 66.7 percent (6-of-9) from deep, and 70 percent (7-of-10) from the line.
