JAMAICA, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball showed progress throughout Friday's non-conference match, but were unable to keep pace with the visiting Purchase College Panthers (2-9), falling in straight sets (25-10, 25-10, 25-16) inside York College Gymnasium.
Purchase commanded the first set from the off, with York's standout moment being a solo block by
Nadaysia Nivar to cut the lead to 21-8. The Panthers continued their control into the second stanza, racing out in front 13-3. York answered after Purchase's initial flurry, splitting the following eight points before losing the set.
Ellma Hodzic produced two well-placed kills in the set for the Cardinals. York responded early in the third stanza, playing ahead with leads of 6-3 and 8-7. Their 8-7 advantage would be the Cardinals' last as the Panthers slowly pulled away, winning 18 of the following 23 points. York's 16 points during the final set demonstrated they played their best volleyball at the end, a progression they can look to carry throughout the season.
Shamonie Miller stood out for the Cardinals, finishing with a team-best four kills. Additionally, Miller took 25 attacks, a season-high for any York player in 2022. Hodzic also added three kills and tallied a team-best seven digs. Nivar and
Cherub Autar contributed setting-wise, as they recorded two, and three assists, respectively.
Andrea Wright had the Cardinals' only ace of the night, a low line drive in the third set that evaded the Panthers' back-line.
Samantha Fasce was the highlight for Purchase. She tallied a game-best 16 points and 12 kills. She also chipped in with the team's only solo block. Karina Medina finished with 21 assists and six aces, which led both programs on the night. Lilith Bastek-Ochoa also played an important role, totaling nine digs and three kills.
Purchase finished with the edge in points (45-10), kills (25-7), aces (18-1), assists (24-7, and digs (31-17). Both schools each recorded two blocks.
The Cardinals (0-10, 0-2 CUNYAC) return to the court Tuesday (Oct. 4) to square off in a CUNYAC tri-match starting with the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (7-7, 0-0 CUNYAC) at 2 p.m. followed by the Hunter College Hawks (7-3, 0-0 CUNYAC) at 2 p.m. inside West Quad Center Gymnasium.
