Third-quarter surge sends @yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball to 57-47 season-finale triumph over CCNY

York College defeated City College of New York for the third time this season to close out the campaign with a win


JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.comYork College women's basketball erased a six-point halftime deficit by holding a +15 scoring edge in the final 20 minutes Wednesday evening to close out the season at home with a 57-47 win over the City College of New York Beavers (0-18) in a non-conference matchup.  The Cardinals produced three wins against CCNY to finish the season with a record of 8-10.

How it Happened
  • CCNY owned the opening minutes of the game by jumping out to a 4-0 lead. 
  • York answered as Alicia Gumbs scored eight points during a 10-3 spurt over the final 6:46 to pull the Cardinals in front by three (10-7) at the end of the first quarter. 
  • CCNY scored nine-straight points to reclaim a 16-10 advantage just 2:14 into the second stanza. 
  • Ellma Hodzic then scored four of York's next seven points to go back up by one (17-16) before CCNY scored six-unanswered points over the final 2:39 to own a 23-18 edge at the break. 
  • Trailing 31-25, Hodzic drilled a 3-pointer to ignite a decisive 14-0 surge over the final 2:34 capped by Kristina Sierra's triple that gave York a 39-31 lead to close out the third period. 
  • Playing ahead for the final 11:35, York went up by 11 with a 7-2 spurt to open the fourth. 
  • CCNY responded with a 6-0 run before York pushed its lead to a game-high 13 points (54-41) with 2:19 showing on the clock off the power of an 8-0 scoring spree as Gumbs and Aminata Sagna each tallied four during that stretch.  
Inside the Box Score 
Gumbs played 40 minutes to tie a career-high with 19 points (7-of-15 FG, 4-of-5 FT) and eight rebounds, and contributed three assists and one steal to the win.  Hodzic followed with 18 points, four steals and three assists.  Sagna pulled down 11 rebounds, and registered nine points, three assists and two steals while Sierra added nine points, three assists, three steals and two blocks.

Monae Laing paced CCNY with 19 points (8-of-14 FG), 12 rebounds, one block and one steal.  Fatoumata Nantoume pitched in 12 points, four assists and one steal.  Leondra Craig went for 10 points and six rebounds.

In the end, York shot 34.4 percent (21-of-61) from the floor, 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from 3-point land and 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the free-throw line as CCNY connected on 40 percent (20-of-50) from the field, 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from outside the arc and 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from the charity stripe.  The Cardinals scored 25 points off 27 CCNY turnovers and turned 15 offensive rebounds into 11 second-chance points.  York outplayed CCNY in steals (13-7) and fast-break points (6-2), while both teams drew even in blocks (2-2), points in the paint (30-30) and bench scoring (2-2).  The Beavers held the advantage in rebounds (40-38) and points in the paint (22-20).
