Balanced attack sends @yorkcardinals Men’s Basketball to victory at John Jay, 91-78

York College returns home Tuesday (Feb. 15) for a CUNYAC Senior Day matchup against Brooklyn College to close out the regular season


NEW YORK --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball powered past the John Jay College Bloodhounds (10-13, 7-6 CUNYAC) with a 91-78 wire-to-wire CUNYAC victory on the road Sunday afternoon inside The Doghouse.  The win cemented York its first season sweep of John Jay since 2015-16, the same year that York made its last postseason appearance.

How it Happened​​​​​​
  • Both teams traded baskets to start the game before York pushed ahead 11-2 with a 9-0 spurt capped by Devine Chisholm's 3-pointer 2:48 in. 
  • Moments later, Quran Dublin scored five points during a 10-2 Cardinal rally to go up 15 (21-6) with 12:05 left. 
  • Olawale Kila and Mambe Koureissi later dropped in back-to-back layups to grow York's lead to 17 (27-10) with 8:37 showing on the first-half clock. 
  • John Jay got as close as eight in the final minutes before Donald Hartley Jr. drilled a 3-pointer to send a 41-30 game into the break. 
  • York sizzled in the opening half, draining 51.5 percent (17-of-33) from the field, 44 percent (4-of-9) from 3-point range and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. 
  • The Cardinals also made the most of their six offensive rebounds in the opening stanza, scoring 12 second-chance points.  
  • John Jay scored first and netted 11 of the first 17 points to open the second-half to trim its deficit to six (47-41) with 15:57 remaining. 
  • York responded 2:30 later with a 10-2 run that was closed out by Dublin's triple that made it a 57-43 game. 
  • After the Bloodhounds chipped away to cut York's lead to 11 (66-55), the Cardinals used an 8-1 run to extend the advantage to a game-high 18 points (74-56) with 5:24 left. 
  • John Jay came back with a 10-2 scoring spree at the 3:29 mark to pull within 10 (76-66), and later got as close as six (84-78) with 54 seconds remaining. 
  • York iced the game by sinking 9-of-10 from the line in the final 54 seconds to secure the 13-point win.  
Inside the Box Score
The Cardinals finished with six scorers in double-digits, paced by Dublin's 19 points (7-of-12 FG, 2-of-4 3FG, 3-of-4 FT).  Dublin also added six assists, four rebounds and two steals to the win in 38 minutes of action.  Chisholm followed with 16 points (5-of-11 FG, 2-of-3 3FG, 4-of-4 FT) and four assists while Hartley Jr. tallied 15 points (6-of-7 FT).  Guillermo Hernandez posted his seventh double-double of the season, registering 15 points (6-of-8 FG, 3-of-4 FT), 11 rebounds and three blocks.  Koureissi went for 12 points (6-of-11 FG) and nine rebounds as Tavon Price sparked York off the bench with 10 points (3-of-4 FG, 4-of-4 FT).  

Angel Rivera poured in a game-high 22 points (10-of-18 FG) for John Jay.  Garrison Watkins generated 18 points and 12 assists while Corey Jones Jr. (12 points), Dan Kenny (11 points) and Isaac Holmes (10 points) scored in double-figures.  

In the end, York landed 53.2 percent (33-of-62) from the floor, 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from 3-point territory and 83.3 percent (20-of-24) from the charity stripe as John Jay shot 44.3 percent (31-of-70) from the field, 31 percent (9-of-29) from long distance and 58.3 percent (7-of-12) on freebies.  York won the battle of the boards, 40-31, producing 14 second-chance points off 12 offensive rebounds.  The Cardinals also outplayed John Jay in blocks (4-3) and converted 18 Bloodhound miscues into 25 points.  John Jay owned the edge in assists (23-16), steals (8-6) and bench points (27-14).
