NEW YORK --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's soccer opened their CUNYAC campaign Saturday afternoon, dropping a 12-0 decision to the John Jay College Bloodhounds (5-2-2, 1-0-0 CUNYAC) from Field 83 at Randall's Island.
John Jay shot out like a cannon, testing York keeper
Katherine Perez three times in the opening eleven minutes. The Bloodhounds broke the deadlock at 11:29 as Jillian Golden latched onto a pass from Ashley Goldstein for her second of the campaign. Golden's effort turned out to be the match-winner. Three minutes later, Mirka Villarrael notched her first of the season via an assist from Kayla Kelly. John Jay added a third at 24:35 as Alexa Pyatsky scored her first career collegiate goal. Pyatsky added another five minutes later. Leylah Murad and Katie Haley tacked on goals to complete the first-half frenzy. Facing John Jay's twelve shots, Perez (0-2-0) produced six quality saves.
Emma Fisher, Daniela Vazquez, Lucia Giangaspero, Sierra Dazhan, Morgan DeGlopper, and Tarah Kennedy all got in on the action in the second stanza. Making five stops in the first frame, Perez produced two in the second half, setting her career-high at seven saves.
Discussing the result, head coach
Winston Willabus spoke highly about Nayelley Rojas, who is also competing in other sports for the Cardinals.
"Rojas has proven to be surprisingly competitive and committed to improving. She has played within her skillset, but has confidently challenged opponents and made smart soccer plays when called upon."
Character-wise,
"the players have begun to hold each other accountable. That begins with our senior, Taylor Bellmon, and continues throughout the rest of the team. That will be important as we move forward."-coach Willabus added
The Cardinals (0-2-0, 0-1-0 CUNYAC) travel to Lehman College to play in a non-conference road affair against the Lightning (0-5-0, 0-1-0 CUNYAC) on Monday (Oct. 10). The match begins at 1 p.m. and will be played at South Field in the Bronx.
