www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball outscored the visiting City College of New York Beavers (1-12, 1-3 CUNYAC) by 11 points in the second quarter and never looked back Wednesday evening to notch a 62-31 CUNYAC win inside York College Gymnasium.
After both teams traded baskets in the early going, CCNY scored six-straight points to take a 7-3 lead 3:50 in.
Kristina Sierra answered 16 seconds later with one of her three first-half 3-pointers to spark a 7-2 run to give York a 10-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. CCNY broke the second-quarter scoring ice with a Tianna Fumasoli layup to grab an 11-10 lead with 8:09 remaining.
Mac-Dege Dessources dropped in a layup 19 second later to ignite a key 19-6 run give York a 30-18 lead at intermission.
CCNY raced out of the second-half gates with five-straight points to trim its deficit to seven (30-23). Sierra sank a triple at the 5:50 mark to spur an 11-2 run for a 41-25 Cardinal lead at the end of the third period. The Beavers got as close as 13 points in the final stanza as a Cabrera layup started a 19-1 scoring spree to close out the final 7:54 to extend York's lead to a game-high 31 points.
Sierra poured in a career-high 19 points (7-of-14 FG) on 5-of-10 shooting from deep to lead all scorers. Off the bench,
Destiny Drummond followed with 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals in 24 minutes of action. Dessources totaled nine points, 16 rebounds, four blocks and two steals while
Keyla Cabrera added nine points (4-of-6 FG) and nine rebounds.
Diamond Jackson chipped in with nine rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Fumasoli and Reilly Boehm each scored 12 points to pace CCNY. Melanie Torres grabbed five rebounds and Shanyah Lander nabbed three steals.
York shot 35.8 percent from the field (24-of-67), 37.5 percent from 3-point land (6-of-16) and 40 percent from the free-throw line (8-of-20) as the Cardinals limited CCNY to 16.1 percent from the floor (10-of-62), 22.7 percent from long distance (5-of-22) and 54.5 percent from the charity stripe (6-of-11). The Cardinals held a +23 rebounding margin (63-40) and scored just six second-chance points off 21 offensive boards. York also outplayed CCNY in assists (20-7), blocks (5-0), points in the paint (26-8), bench scoring (32-3) and points off turnovers (22-5). CCNY edged the Cardinals in steals, 10-9.
The Cardinals (5-8, 2-2 CUNYAC) travel Saturday (Jan. 11) for a CUNYAC road matchup inside ARC Arena against the Baruch College Bearcats (9-2, 3-1 CUNYAC) starting at 12 p.m. in Manhattan.
