Bookhart’s 18 leads @yorkcardinals Men’s Basketball at John Jay

York College hosts Medgar Evers College on Friday (Jan. 17) to open a two-game CUNYAC homestand


MANHATTAN --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball fell behind early and were unable to recover Wednesday evening to close out a two-game CUNYAC roadtrip with a 77-62 setback to the Jay College Bloodhounds (10-4, 4-1 CUNYAC) from The Doghouse in Manhattan.

The Bloodhounds raced out to a quick 8-0 lead before Devine Chisholm stuck a jumper to put York on the board 2:47 in.  John Jay's lead reached 11 (13-2) at the 15:47 mark and played with a double-digit advantage for the final 35:47. The Cardinals trailed by as many as 23 points (36-13) in the first half while John Jay drained 11 3-pointers and put back 18 second-chance points.  York pulled within 17 (39-22) with 1:32 left off Chisholm's layup for two of his eight first-half points.

Trailing 44-24 at the break, York outscored John Jay by five (38-33) in the final 20 minutes to get as close as 14 points (64-50) with 7:04 showing on the second-half clock.  

York was led by Jaye Bookhart, who scored a game-high 18 points (8-of-18 FG) to go with five rebounds, four assists and two steals.  Akil Vaughn tallied 11 points and Chisholm followed with 10. Guillermo Hernandez contributed nine points (4-of-6 FG), six rebounds and one steal in 29 minutes off the bench.  Donald Hartley, Jr. chipped in with eight points, four assists and two steals.

Jayson Brower and Doug Levy both scored 16 points to pace John Jay.  Levy added 13 rebounds to his statline as Kyle LaGuardio went for 12 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and two steals. 

York hit on 32.4 percent from the field (23-of-71), 18.8 from 3-point territory (3-of-16) and landed 86.7 percent from the free-throw line (13-of-15) while John Jay landed 43.5 percent from the floor (27-of-62), 45.2 percent from long distance (14-of-31) and 75 percent from the charity stripe (9-of-12).  The Bulldogs held a 46-38 rebounding edge, scoring 24 second-chance points off 15 offensive boards. York converted 18 Bloodhound miscues into 13 points while John Jay outplayed the Cardinals in assists (21-9), blocks (13-0) and bench scoring (24-9). Both teams drew even in steals (7-7).

The Cardinals (6-10, 2-4 CUNYAC) open a two-game CUNYAC homestand Friday (Jan. 17) starting with a showdown against the Medgar Evers College Cougars (4-11, 1-4 CUNYAC) at 7:30 p.m. inside York College Gymnasium.
