PATCHOGUE, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's soccer netted back-to-back goals to tie the game in the second half before the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (1-3-0) responded with a trio unanswered goals to post a 5-2 non-conference win Saturday afternoon at the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Invitational from SJC Outdoor Field Complex in Patchogue, New York.
After a quiet opening minutes, the Cardinals fired first with a
Hans Merilan header that sailed high for the game's first shot 8:04 in. The Bears answered 1:20 later as Joao Gavilanes beat the Cardinal defense to slip one past goalie
Jasper McLeod (0-3-0) to break the scoring ice. York fell behind by two in the 14th minute with Joseph Sepulveda finishing a feed from Mateusz Georges for the 2-0 lead.
Abdel Manahf Idrissou would then test Bear goalie Alejandro Oliveros (1-3-0) with a shot on target at the 17:38 mark. Merilan put York on the board in the 42nd minute by connecting on his first-career goal to slice the deficit in half after finishing a cross from
Steve Zang in the 42nd minute.
York carried the momentum into the second half as
Doston Abdigaffarov gathered a costly turnover by Oliveros for his first-career goal for the equalizer in the 51st minute. The Bears answered 3:49 later with the game-winning goal from Sepulveda off a through ball to grab a 3-2 lead. Sepulveda then doubled the Bears' advantage in the 83rd minute before Abdul Altabchi closed out the scoring in the 87th minute.
McLeod made five stops while Oliveros deflected two shots to secure the win.
At the end of 90 minutes, St. Joseph's outplayed York in shots (18-9), shots on goal (10-4) and corner kicks (4-1).
The Cardinals (0-3-0) are back in action Sunday (Sept. 8) to open their seven-game home schedule with a non-conference matchup against the SUNY Poly Wildcats (1-1-0) at 4 PM from Aviator Field in Brooklyn.
