Medgar Evers Outduels Men’s Basketball on Senior Night

JAMAICA, N.Y. — Three players in double-figures weren't enough for the York College (N.Y.) men's basketball team (9-16, 5-11 CUNYAC) as they fell 95-83 at home to Medgar Evers College (8-16, 6-9 CUNYAC) in a conference battle on Monday night. The Cardinals celebrated Senior Night and bid farewell to Taishaun Forehand-Jenkins, Darin Dove, Maliqe John, and Brandon Herriot.

The Cougars started off hot and held a sizeable lead early on, but the Cardinals were able to cut the gap and Medgar Evers went into halftime leading 33-27. By the numbers, the first was evenly matched as the two sides shot similar percentages — MEC: 46.4% FG, 37.5% 3FG, York: 47.6% FG, 33.3% 3FG — but York had three more turnovers and MEC's Justin Sutton scorched the net for a game-high 14 points in the first.

Joancarlo Bonilla took over for Medgar Evers in the second-half, scoring 30 points in the final 20 minutes (7-9 3FG) — 35 in the game — while Sutton posted 20 additional points (34 total) in the period. The Cougars pulled away from York with very impressive shooting percentages in the second half (64% FG, 83.3% 3FG) as the whole team caught fire late to close out the contest.

Jenkins dropped a team-high 23 points while John (18 points) and Herriot (15 points) rounded out the players in double-figures. Devine Chisholm had eight points and two steals while Luca Tamer added seven points, five boards, four assists, and three steals (both off the bench). Akil Vaughn notched six points, 10 rebounds, two assists, and a block in the loss.
