JAMAICA, NY --- York College men's volleyball opened the 2019 season Friday evening with a straight-set non-conference sweep (25-15, 25-17, 25-15) of the visiting Northern Vermont University-Johnson Badgers (0-4) inside York College Gymnasium. The Cardinals (1-0) earn their first season-opening win since 2008, when they started the campaign with a 3-1 (30-24, 30-17, 27-30, 30-23) triumph over Yeshiva University.
The Cardinals hit a match-high .333 with 12 kills on 21 swings in the opening set before finishing the evening firing away at a rate of .158 (31 kills). By comparison, York kept the Badgers in check to the tune of a -.196 attacking percentage for the match. York also outplayed NVU-Johnson in assists (27-5), aces (12-6) and digs (28-24).
Kevin Campbell, who ignited the Cardinals with a match-leading 25 points and 20 kills to hit .444, set the tone early with seven first-set kills followed by eight more in the second. Campbell also served a match-high five aces and scooped nine digs.
Juan Rodriguez served three aces and directed the Cardinal offense with 22 assists.
Philton Paul added 11 points as he nailed down nine kills and landed two aces while
Harry Silva served a pair of aces.
Travis Benson's three aces led NVU-Johnson. Austin Walters collected three kills and Wyatt Moberg contributed nine digs.
The Cardinals remain at home Saturday (Feb. 2) for a non-conference showdown with the College of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins (0-3) at 12:30 p.m.
