www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball continued their five-game homestand Monday afternoon with a 67-44 setback to the Manhattanville College Valiants (7-1) in non-conference action to close out the 2019 portion of the schedule inside York College Gymnasium.
After the Valiants broke the scoring ice with a pair of Sarah Coutu free-throws 41 seconds in,
Ellma Hodzic answered 42 seconds later with a jumper to put York on the board. Manhattanville then raced out to a 15-point lead before
Iyanah Mirville drained a 3-pointer as time expired to trim York's deficit to 12 (24-12) at the end of the first quarter. During a second stanza that saw the Valiants outscore York by 11 (14-3),
Keyla Cabrera sank a free-throw with 2:05 left to end Manhattanville's 8-0 run.
Mac-Dege Dessources dropped in a layup 1:11 later prior to Spencer Shore responding with a layup in the closing seconds to boost the Valiant lead to 23 (38-15) heading into intermission.
Playing with a double-digit advantage for the final 31:16, Manhattanville extended its lead to a game-high 30 points (49-19) with four minutes remaining in the third period. Hodzic then scored nine points as part of a 12-2 Cardinal spurt over a stretch of 3:41 to pull within 20 points (51-31) during a third period that saw York own a 16-13 scoring advantage. York later scored seven-unanswered points in the fourth quarter capped by Dessources' triple to chop the margin to 17 (57-40) with 3:59 remaining.
Hodzic poured in a game-high 19 points (7-of-19 FG, 5-of-5 FT) and nabbed four steals to pace York. Dessources followed with 11 points (4-of-7 FG), seven rebounds and two steals while
Destiny Drummond tied a career high with three steals.
Coutu scored 14 of her team-leading 16 points (5-of-12 FG, 5-of-6 FT) in the first half to lead Manhattanville to victory. Amanda Pemberton contributed 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals to the win as Shore finished with 13 points.
York connected on a season-high 75 percent from the free-throw line (12-of-16) and finished the game shooting 27.8 percent from the field (15-of-54) and 13.3 percent from 3-point range (2-of-15) as Manhattanville landed 46.4 percent from the floor (26-of-56), 13.3 percent from long distance (2-of-15) and 68.4 percent from the charity stripe (13-of-19). The Valiants outrebounded York by seven (39-32) and scored six second-chance points off 10 offensive boards. Manhattanville also outplayed York in steals (18-11), assists (14-7), blocks (2-0) and points in the paint (36-16) while scoring 33 points off 30 Cardinal miscues.
The Cardinals (3-6) start the new year on Thursday (Jan. 2) with a non-conference matchup at home against the Mount Holyoke College Lions (1-9) at 7 p.m. inside York College Gymnasium.
