@yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball opens CUNYAC slate at Brooklyn

York College continues CUNYAC play Friday (Dec. 6) at Lehman College


BROOKLYN --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball opened CUNYAC play Tuesday evening with an 80-48 setback on the road to the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (4-2, 1-0 CUNYAC) from West Quad Gymnasium in Brooklyn.  

The Cardinals raced out to a quick 4-0 lead on back-to-back layups from Daniesha Newsome and Ellma Hodzic 1:02 in.  York nailed a trio of 3-pointers during a 13-6 spurt to close out the final 3:06 of first-quarter play with a 23-13 lead.  The Cardinals played with the lead for the opening 13:53 before Brooklyn went on a 28-4 scoring spree to go up 41-27 with 58 seconds left in the half.  The Bulldogs outscored York by 21 points during the second stanza to lead 41-30 at intermission.

Brooklyn carried its momentum into a second half that saw the Bulldogs hold a 21-point scoring advantage en route to a building a game-high 35-point lead.

Hodzic finished with 11 points and two steals to pace York.  Mac-Dege Dessources followed with nine points and 11 rebounds while Newsome and Destenee Bailey each scored seven.

Ericka James came off the bench to lead all scorers with 24 points (10-of-17 FG, 4-of-7 3FG) for Brooklyn.  Dasha Goodman added 15 points (6-of-10 FG) and 10 rebounds to the win.

In the end, York connected on 29.8 percent from the field (17-of-57), 23.5 percent from 3-point land (4-of-17) and 58.8 percent from the free-throw line (10-of-17) as Brooklyn shot 38.2 percent from the floor (29-of-76), 33.3 percent from deep (12-of-36) and 71.4 percent from the stripe (10-of-14).  Both teams drew even in blocks (1-1) while Brooklyn outplayed York in steals (15-7) and assists (23-11).  Brooklyn won the boards battle, 50-45, scoring 16 second-chance points off 19 offensive rebounds and converted 31 Cardinal turnovers into 34 points.

The Cardinals (1-4, 0-1 CUNYAC) remain on the road Friday (Dec. 6) at 5:30 p.m. against the Lehman College Lightning (0-6, 0-1 CUNYAC) in a CUNYAC showdown from APEX Gymnasium in Bronx.
