www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball shot 48.4 percent in the second half but were unable to overcome an early deficit Friday evening to open the season with an 85-68 setback to the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles (1-0) inside York College Gymnasium.
The Cardinals got off to a slow start, misfiring on five attempts from the field before
Donald Hartley, Jr. dropped in a layup for York's first points of the season 4:18 in. St. Joseph's started strong to build a 15-4 lead with 12:45 left. York scored five-straight points to pull within six points (15-9) on a layup by
Akil Vaughn followed by Hartley, Jr.'s triple. The Golden Eagles put together a 12-4 spurt to grab a 30-16 advantage.
Devine Chisholm cut York's deficit to single digits in the final minute before Frank Basile scored two of his 15 first-half points to make it a 39-28 game heading into intermission.
York scored back-to-back buckets to make it a nine-point game (41-32) with 17:50 remaining in the second half. St. Joseph's then scored 11 of the game's next 15 points to extend the lead to 16 (52-36) with 13:47 showing on the second-half clock. York got as close as 11 (58-47) midway through the stanza and trailed by as many as 19 in the final minute.
Chisholm produced seven rebounds and four assists while pouring in 17 points (7-of-13 FG) to lead four Cardinals in double-digits. Hartley, Jr. scored 12 points to go with four assists and two steals while
DaQuan Workman came off the bench to score 10 of his 12 points (5-of-6 FG) in the second half.
Mambe Koureissi added 10 points and eight rebounds as Vaughn pulled down 11 boards to go with eight points.
Basile led St. Joseph's with a game-high 26 points (10-of-18 FG) and added 10 rebounds to his statline. Running the Golden Eagle offense was Doug Niblock, who registered nine points, nine assists and nine rebounds.
In the end, York shot 41.5 percent from the field (27-of-65), 23.5 percent from three-point range (4-of-17) and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line (10-of-14) compared to the Golden Eagles connecting on 44.7 percent from the floor (34-of-76), 35.3 percent from beyond the arc (12-of-34) and 83.3 percent from the charity stripe (5-of-6). York won the battle of the boards, 43-39, while St. Joseph's scored 13 second-chance points off 10 offensive rebounds. St. Joseph's converted 17 Cardinals miscues into 10 points while outscoring York's bench, 30-14.
The Cardinals (0-1) remain at home Tuesday (Nov. 12) for a non-conference matchup against the SUNY Maritime Privateers at 7 p.m.
