BROOKLYN --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's soccer closed out the season Wednesday afternoon with a heartbreaking 2-1 CUNYAC loss in overtime to the Hunter College Hawks (7-7-1, 6-1-0 CUNYAC) on Senior Day from Aviator Field. Prior to kickoff, seniors
Abdel Manahf Idrissou (2016-19),
Ricardo Mendez (2015, 2019),
Vladimir Pavlovic (2016-19) and
Fabrice Pierre-Paul (2017-19) were celebrated with the annual Senior Day Ceremony for their dedication to York College Athletics.
Hunter put a pair of shots high of the goal to start before York answered with an attempt on target by
Marvin Mondesir to test Hawk goalie Noah Dougherty (6-7-1) in the 16th minute. York was unlucky in the 26th minute as an open goal attempt by Mondesir was kicked away by the Hunter defense to keep the Cardinals off the board. The Hawks pressured Cardinal goalie
Jasper McLeod (3-10-1), who was up to the challenge and made three stops during a span of 4:15 from 22:27-26:43. The Hawks held a 10-8 edge in shots at the end of 45 minutes of scoreless play.
York broke through at the 68:48 mark with a blast by
Shemar Green from outside the box to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Green gathered a loose ball to score his second goal of the season. The Hawks responded 3:01 later with the equalizer by Blaise Enama, who used his head to redirect a feed from Lavjit Singh. Hunter took six shots compared to York's two in the final 18:11 as the two teams moved to overtime.
The Hawks carried the momentum to hold a 6-0 advantage in shots in the extra frame that saw Enama net the decisive goal on a rebound with 1:25 remaining in the period to settle the 2-1 final.
In the end, York was outplayed by Hunter in shots (30-11), shots on goal (12-4) and corner kicks (8-2).
The Cardinals finish the season with a record of 3-11-1 overall and 2-4-1 in CUNYAC play to produce their best season since 2014, when the team went 5-13 over and 2-6 in the league standings. York went 2-1-1 down the stretch and nearly made a return trip to the postseason for the first time since 2013.
