Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball led by Dessources’ double-double in hard-fought CUNYAC home loss to Baruch

York College women's basketball committed a costly turnover in the final seconds Monday evening to drop a 47-45 heartbreaking CUNYAC decision to the visiting Baruch College Bearcats (3-7, 2-3 CUNYAC) inside York College Gymnasium.

The Cardinals (2-12, 1-5 CUNYAC) jumped out to a 9-2 advantage at the 6:57 mark as Sheahna Roscher and Ellma Hodzic connected from deep to build a game-high seven-point lead.  With a 13-all game at the end of one period of play, Baruch grabbed its first lead (15-13) with 8:18 left on the second-quarter clock.  Valsenia Michie would then drop in a layup to cap a 13-4 Bearcat run to put Baruch up by four (17-13).  Mac-Dege Dessources and Hodzic both scored four points during York's 10-2 scoring spree to regain a four-point lead (23-19) with 3:27 remaining.  Baruch scored four of the game's next-five points to trail 24-23 at intermission.

Down by three (27-24) 4:44 into second-half action, Keyla Cabrera's layup ignited an 11-2 Cardinal spurt to build a 35-29 lead.  Dessources later sank a free throw with 25 seconds left to send York into the fourth stanza with a five-point cushion (36-31).  Both teams played even in the early goings of the fourth quarter until Baruch went on a 12-1 run to construct a 41-36 advantage with 6:48 remaining.  York kept it cool down the stretch to pull with one on two separate occasions including a jumper by Kristina Sierra with 11 seconds left to make it a 46-45 game.   Baruch forced Cabrera into a turnover in the closing seconds to escape with the two-point win.

Dessources combined 13 points, 18 rebounds (eight offensive), four blocks and two steals to register her eighth double-double of the season in leading York.  Hodzic went for 13 points, five assists and two steals while Cabrera grabbed 14 rebounds.  Roscher and Aminata Sagna each nabbed three steals.

Melinda Spahiu paced Baruch with nine points, nine rebounds and 11 steals.  Frances Snyder scored nine points as Samantha Genco added eight points, five assists and four steals.

York shot 29.7 percent (19-of-64) from the field, 10 percent (2-of-20) from three-point range and 50 percent (5-of-10) from the free-throw line.  The Bearcats were limited to 27 percent (17-of-63) shooting from the floor, 25 percent (4-of-16) from long distance and 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from the charity stripe.  York owned a +31 rebound margin to win the boards battle, 65-34.  The Cardinals also scored 14 second-chance points off 23 offensive rebounds.

The Cardinals remain at home Wednesday (Jan. 9) for a CUNYAC matchup against the John Jay College Bloodhounds (7-5, 3-2 CUNYAC) at 5:30 p.m. in Jamaica, New York.
