Men’s Swimming topped by Brooklyn; Women’s Swimming outpaced against Brooklyn and Hunter
JAMAICA, NY --- York College men's and women's swimming opened the 2019 calendar year at home Friday evening with a CUNYAC showdown against the Brooklyn College Bulldogs and Hunter College Hawks. The Cardinal men fell to Brooklyn by the count of 71-18 while York was upended in the women's meet by Hunter, 78-8, and Brooklyn, 68-14.
Anthony Nazario and
Juan Rodriguez paced the Cardinals in the men's competition. Nazario took second in the 400-meter freestyle (7:43.88) and 800-meter freestyle (16:03.38) races as Rodriguez touched the wall second in the 100-meter freestyle (1:14.69) and 200-meter freestyle (3:30.91).
Jeremy Chao rounded out York's second-place finishers by clocking a time of 3:30.91 in the 200-meter freestyle. Chao also placed third in the 200-meter IM (4:15.43) while
Jeremy Sapeg collected third place in the 50-meter freestyle (29.94) and 100-meter butterfly (1:37.70).
Rodriguez, Chao, Sapeg and Nazario joined forces to finish second in the 200-meter medley relay in 2:35.30.
On the women's side,
Mariela Rosario led York by capturing second place in the 200-meter IM in 2:58.31. The Cardinals also received fourth-place efforts from
Dorianny Rojas in the 100-meter backstroke (2:16.64) and
Shantusha Kanhai in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:36.83).
Rojas,
Kaithlyn Taylor, Kanhai and Rosario combined to finish third in the 200-meter freestyle relay in 2:44.50.
York returns to action next Friday (Jan. 11) with a women's meet at 6 p.m. in Patchogue, New York against the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears and St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles inside Danzi Center. The Cardinal men will then join the women on the road with a CUNYAC matchup against the Lehman College Lightning on January 15 at 6 p.m. from APEX Pool in Bronx.
