Second Half Goal Gives Clarks Summit Narrow Victory Over Women’s Soccer
NEW YORK, NY — Looking for their first win of the season, the York College (N.Y.) women's soccer team (0-4) hosted Clarks Summit University (2-1) at Randall's Island Field 70 on Saturday afternoon. The first half was a tightly contested battle, as the two sides were locked at one goal apiece through 45 minutes. However, a lone tally in the second from the Defenders propelled them to a narrow road win.
York's offense was aggressive out of the gate as they had two shots on goal and two corner kicks in the first 12 minutes of play. Clarks Summit opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, however, as Simone Stewart's shot from the top of the box trickled past the York goalie and gave the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals answered two minutes later when freshman Diana Velasquez (Bayshore, N.Y./Brentwood) beat the goalie one-on-one from 25 yards out to knot the score at one.
Ten minutes into the second half the Defenders moved the ball deep into York territory and Stewart crossed the ball into the box from the left side, setting up Shelby Brownlee for a five yard tap in and a 2-1 advantage. York came close to tying it up in the 68th minute as Velasquez broke away down the right sideline and fired a long-range shot that clanged off the crossbar.
For the Cardinals, Velasquez led the offense with five shots (3 on goal) and the lone goal, while Michelle Rodriguez (Queens Village, N.Y./Thomas Edison) and Taylor Bellmon (Manhattan, N.Y./Williamsburg Charter) each added a shot on goal. Junior goalkeeper Diamond Jackson (Ellenville, N.Y./Ellenville) saved seven shots in defeat.
Next up for the Cardinals is a home game versus New Jersey City University at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, New York. Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m.
