JAMAICA, N.Y. — The York College (N.Y.) women's volleyball team (0-10, 0-6 CUNYAC) hosted the College of Staten Island (8-4, 4-0 CUNYAC) on Saturday night and fell in straight sets by scores of 25-1, 25-17, and 25-12.
Freshman
Shamonie Miller (Queens, N.Y./Information Tech) slammed a kill to knot the first set at one, but a 24-0 run from the Dolphins, powered by eight Francesca Castellano aces, put the frame away in quick fashion.
York fell behind 4-1 to open the second, but they rallied for six unanswered points behind a kill and an ace from Miller to take a 7-4 lead. A CSI service error kept the Cardinals in it, 13-10, in the middle of the set until a 7-2 flurry from the visitors put things out of reach.
Two kills and a block from Jay-La Guy gave the Dolphins' a 10-1 advantage in the third as they looked to close out the match. Another Guy kill pushed it to 18-1 until back-to-back York points, capped by an
Argenis Morales (Bogota, Colombia/Universidad Central) kill, made it 18-3. York fell 25-5 and suffered their 10th loss of the season.
Miller (11 digs) and
Chayana Jimenez (Dominican Republic/Gregorio Luperon) led the Cardinals with two kills apiece and Kiara Gonzales (Puerto Rico/Northside Charter) served up three assists in defeat. Next up for York is a non-league road matchup at St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) on Monday (Oct. 1) at 6 p.m.
