WOMEN’S SOCCER DROPS SEASON OPENER TO SARAH LAWRENCE

YONKERS, N.Y. -- The York College (NY) women's soccer team played its first game of the season this morning against Sarah Lawrence College at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers, New York, but came up on the wrong end of a 6-0 decision.

After the Gryphons (1-0) struck first in the opening minute on a Kiley Ritter putback, the Cardinal defense settled in and held the hosts scoreless for nearly 30 minutes of action. But the Gryphons rattled off three quick goals in a span of five minutes to take 4-0 lead at intermission.

Ritter opened the scoring in the second half with a breakaway goal in the 63rd minute and finished with two goals and one assist to lead all players.

Stephanie Gutierrez (Brooklyn, NY/Williamsburg Charter HS) finished with nine saves in defeat for York. Rookie Diana Velasquez (Bayshore, NY/Brentwood HS) recorded the only shot for the red and white.

The Cardinals (0-1) head south on Sunday for a road test against Notre Dame of Maryland University at 1:00 p.m. Links to the live video and stats can be found on YorkCardinals.com.
