Cardinals Edged In Season Finale by Staten Island

JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College men's volleyball team lost a tight match to the College of Staten Island in its 2018 season finale. The Cardinals lost 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 26-24, 26-24).

After the teams split the first two sets, the third and fourth sets were nailbiters. In the third set, the teams went back and forth until a Frederis Tapia kill gave the Cardinals set point. However, Staten Island responded with three straight points, thanks to a kill and two York errors to pull ahead 2-1.

In the fourth set, York once again had set point following a CSI error. However, York committed a service error and then CSI followed with an ace to set up match point. Another York error followed and CSI clinched the set and the match.

The Cardinals lost despite hitting a at higher percentage (.250) than Staten Island (.192).  Staten Island committed 10 more hitting errors than York, but also had 30 more attempts, which resulted in nine more kills for the Dolphins (58) than York (49).

Two of York's seniors had great performances in their final match as Cardinals. Tapia finished with a career-high 19 kills and a .395 hitting percentage and fellow senior Akeem George registered 14 kills and five digs.  Another senior, Adil Manji recorded 26 assists and five digs and senior Neko Lyttle had eight digs.  Larry Moore had 16 assists in his final match.  Meanwhile, Freshman Akil Vaughn showed the future is bright for York, as he finished with 12 kills and five blocks to close out his freshman campaign.
