BOX SCORE JAMAICA, N.Y—The York College men's basketball team put together a solid team effort, with five players scoring in double figures as they defeated Hunter College, 81-69 at home Tuesday night.
Edwin Sainvil scored 19 points to lead York, while
Taishaun Forehand-Jenkins netted 14 points with seven rebounds and three assists.
Ryan Smart had a double-double (12 points, 11 boards) to go along with three blocks and
Jean Joseph scored 12 points as well.
Jonathan Jones had a nice game off the bench, scoring 11 points with eight boards and two steals in just 22 minutes of action.
York got off to an impressive start, jumping out to a 22-9 advantage just seven minutes into the game. A Sainvil three-pointer immediately followed by a
Stephan Cadet three-point play helped spark York to the early lead. The Cardinals continued their strong play throughout the first half and went into the locker room up by eight thanks to a Forehand-Jenkins three-pointer at the buzzer.
The Cardinals came out a bit sluggish to start the second half and Hunter got back into the game, closing to within one point at the 16:45 mark. The game stayed close until about eight minutes remaining when York opened up a 12-2 run to go up 70-58. A
Ryan Smart steal and dunk helped cap off the run for York. York was able to cruise to victory from there, leading by as many as 18 points the rest of the way.
In the loss, Hunter was led by George Keener, who had 17 points and eight rebounds. The Hawks drop to 9-11, 6-6 CUNYAC
York got the win despite not having their head coach,
Nolan Adams, who missed the game due to illness. Assistant Coach
Jamel Gist helped to guide the team to victory. The Cardinals improve to 7-13, 5-7 CUNYAC with the win.
York will be back at it tomorrow when they host the College of St. Elizabeth in a non-conference contest at 7 p.m.
