JAMAICA, N.Y.—Paced by
Karen Bellamy's near triple-double, the York College women's basketball team came from behind to defeat Medgar Evers Colllege, 72-65 on Monday night.
The Cardinals trailed by 12 points at halftime but York outscored the Cougars 49-30 in the second half to get the victory.
Bellamy put up a line of 23 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and three steals to lead York to victory.
Sheahna Roscher added 11 points and nine boards and
Diamond Jackson scored 10 points.
Allison Ahmed came off the bench to score nine points.
The Cardinals got off to a rough start and had no answer for Medgar Evers' Cyndi White, who had 15 points and 11 rebounds in just the first half. However, she got herself into foul trouble, picking up her fourth foul early in the second half.
With White out of the game, the Cardinals took advantage. They immediately went on an 11-1 run to cut the deficit down to just two points (36-34). Medgar Evers would regroup though, and pushed their lead back up to 12 points before the end of the third quarter.
York trailed 50-41 going into the final quarter, but they would score the first 12 points of the quarter to move ahead, 53-50. Bellamy scored five points during the run and
Giovana Rosado made a big three to give York the lead.
After the two teams exchanged a couple buckets, York scored 11 unanswered points to go up by 12 and put the game well out of reach. A number of players made baskets to help seal the victory.
With the win, York is now 5-12, 3-7 CUNYAC. Medgar Evers drops to 0-18, 0-9 CUNYAC. The Cardinals will visit Lehman at 7:30 p.m.
