Softball Closes Out the Season With Win Over Yeshiva

BRONX, N.Y.—The York College softball team closed out the 2017 season on a positive note, defeating Yeshiva University, 10-8, in game one of a doubleheader Tuesday night. They fell in the nightcap by a score of 9-8.

Game One Recap
The win helped the Cardinals close out a difficult 2017 season with some good feelings.  It was the first win of the year for York.

Tyler Smith led York in game one, going 1-for-3 with two walks and three RBIs.  She had the big knock in the game, which was a bases-clearing triple in the third inning.  Nathy Reyes went 3-for-4 with two runs and Nicole Ovelheira and Chyla Guevara each collected two hits.

York opened up a 6-0 lead in the top of the second inning.  Four errors by Yeshiva helped set up the big inning, while Guevara and Ovelheira each had RBI singles in the frame.

York put up four more runs in the third inning, highlighted by Smith's three-run triple. Guevara added another run-scoring single to cap off the scoring.

With a 10-2 lead, things seemed comfortable for York, but the Maccabees rallied for two in the third, three in the sixth and two in the seventh to make things interesting.  Yeshiva also loaded the bases in the final inning and put the go-ahead run on base, but Guevara was able to induce a pop-up to end the game.

Guevara went the distance for York, allowing just three earned runs and striking out six to get the victory.

Game Two Recap
After falling behind, 4-3, after three innings, York put up a four-spot in the top of the fourth.  Guevara started the rally with a one-out triple, and after a walk, Smith doubled home a run.  Then with two outs and the bases loaded, Reyes singled home two runs to give York the lead. Gabriela Alvarez followed with another single to put York ahead, 7-4.

York added another run in the fifth to make it 8-4 and looked poised to get the doubleheader sweep. However, Yeshiva plated three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to tie the score at 8-8.

In the final inning, Yeshiva led off with a walk and the runner moved to second on a fielders choice.  She then moved to third on a passed ball and would score the winning run after York committed an error.

It was the third time this season that York lost a game in the final at-bat.

Despite the loss, Guevara would go out in style in her final game, going 4-for-4 with two runs and finishing her career with a .391 batting average—the highest of her career.  Her 25 hits this season are one shy of the school record.

Ovelheira was 1-for-2 with three RBIs.  Ovelheira finishes the season with an even .400 batting average—the second straight season she has batted .400.

Yeshiva finishes the season at 2-22, while York closes out the year with a record of 1-23.
