NEW YORK, N.Y.—After several postponements to start the season, the York College softball team finally got its season underway on Saturday. Unfortunately for York, good things did not come to those who waited and the Cardinals fell to Hunter College by scores of 18-2 and 9-1.
In the opener, York was done in by an eight-run second inning that saw a pair of big home runs—a grand slam by Samantha Molloy, and later a three-run blast by Brittany Salvador. The Hawks followed with a five-spot in the top of the third inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Salvador.
York managed just four hits on the day, led by
Chyla Guevara who had the Cardinals only RBI on the day. Guevara singled through the right side, bringing home
Elizabeth Mansilla in the top of the fifth. York's other run came on a double steal in the second inning, where
Tyler Smith stole second and
Nathy Reyes stole home.
In the second game, York once again got into an early hole after the Hawks plated four runs in the bottom of the first. All four of those runs came on walks with the bases loaded.
The Cardinals only had two hits in game #2, with both coming off the bat of Gabriella Alvarez. Their lone run came on an RBI groundout by
Nathy Reyes.
York (0-2) will return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader at Flowers City Park where they will take on the College of New Rochelle at 2 p.m.
