BROOKLYN, N.Y.—The season opener for the 2016 York College men's soccer season was spoiled by Mt. Aloysius College, who defeated the Cardinals, 5-0, on Friday evening.
 
After closely contested play in the first 18 minutes of action, the Mounties broke through with the first goal of the match, when Alex Duthie scored off a corner kick from Molia Sesay.  Mt. Aloysius would strike again before halftime, getting a goal from Graham Hunter in the 36th minute after a cross in the box.
 
In the second half, the Mounties continued their onslaught, scoring three more goals to put the match well out of reach.  Thomas Sloan (66th minute) and Jalen Terry (81st minute) each scored off a cross, and then Pete Smerecky scored off a loose ball to close out the scoring in the 85th minute.
 
York will hope for a better result this Sunday, when they travel to the College of St. Elizabeth at 12 p.m.
