York Loses Hard-Fought Battle in Thompson Coaching Debut

JAMAICA, N.Y. – With the opening of the new York College gym floor and the coaching debut of York great Renee Thompson, the Cardinals were eager to get their first win of the season. However, the results did not go in favor of the women's volleyball team as Albertus Magnus College defeated them, 3-2.

The first set did not go the way the Cardinals expected it to go. Sloppy plays and mental mistakes hurt York early on. They ended up losing the set 25-11. The Falcons looked much stronger than York and seemed as if they were poised to sweep the Cardinals. The second set was a different story.

York played the second set with more energy and more teamwork than the first set. The unselfish passing and communication sparked a run. The Falcons could not figure out how to stop the attack of the Cardinals. York evened the match with a 25-20 victory.

Coming off of a huge set win, York had the momentum going forward. The third set was a back-and-forth type set in which each squad held multiple leads. The two teams battled down to the wire, but the Falcons prevailed by the score of 25-20.

The momentum switched to Albertus Magnus. However, the Cardinals came out with a bang. The Falcons could not get any attack going due to the stellar defense by York. It was the best the Cardinals played all night. Almost every dig, set, or attack was on point. As a result, York cruised to a 25-11 victory to send it to five sets.

The fifth and final set described exactly how the whole match was going. Each side, once again, went back and forth, fighting to get that first match victory. Despite jumping out to an early lead, York fell just short, losing 15-11.

Renee Daley, who had team-high 10 kills, anchored the Cardinals. Senior Kiranjeet Kaur was solid all night, contributing 18 digs, which tied with teammate Mary Pamolarco. Nemesis Gallegos assisted on 12 kills in her debut. Shauncia McClendon totaled 5 kills with a team-best .235 hitting percentage. It was an overall good effort put forth by every Cardinal.

The Falcons were led by freshman Megan Gritz ,who went on to have a match-high 11 kills.  Marielis Muriel controlled the floor with a match-high 24 assists, as well as 10 digs. Senior Amber Cohens contributed 8 kills.

York College looks to rebound in their next test on the road on September 5 at 11 a.m. against the College of New Rochelle.
