York Men’s Volleyball Advances to CUNYAC Semifinals With Win Over CCNY

JAMAICA, N.Y. – The York College men's volleyball team fought off an energetic CCNY squad in front of a packed house by a score of 3-0, (25-15, 27-25, 25-22) to advance to the CUNYAC Semifinals.

Without its star player Randy Adams, York had to adjust its style of play. CCNY was looking to send the Cardinals home early, trying to take advantage of not having to face Adams. However, York was able to overcome the loss of its sophomore with the leadership of senior Sebastien Francois. Francois' seven kills helped York take the first set. 25-15.

Some miscommunication hurt York in the beginning of the second set. Mental errors allowed the Beavers to keep it close. Midway through the set, York was tied 16-16 after a short run by CCNY. It seemed as if the CCNY wanted the set more, outplaying the Cardinals' squad. It was a back-and-forth type set in which York needed all its strength to pull through. The firepower of the Cardinals and Anson Webb's five kills helped them escape with a 27-25 set victory.

The third set was a similar story to the second. Again, mental miscues hurt York that allowed CCNY to gain more confidence. It was another close set with the two sides matching points. Every point had playoff-type emotional excitement. After a small run by the Beavers to make it 22-20, the Cardinals showcased its talent, winning the third set, 25-23.

Playing in his final home match, Francois was sharp, contributing a match-high 13 kills. Webb was second on the team with 12 kills and finished with an impressive hitting percentage of .500. Also playing in his last home match, Geffrard had a double-double, consisting of 10 kills and 10 digs. Androw Soliman dominated the court with a match-high 34 assists that was key in the victory. Paramvir Singh added 11 digs for the Cardinals.

"Being that Adams was out, Edner and Sebastien had to step up their game," said York Head Coach Andre Titus.  "Both of them elevated their game with their maturity on the court and helped guide the younger ones to make it happen."

York will next travel to Hunter College to take on the Hawks in the CUNYAC Semifinals on April 10 at 4:00 pm. The championship match will be held at 8:00 pm on the same day.  If York advances to the finals, the match will be aired on ESPN 3, which is available in millions of households across the country.
