Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Williams, St. John Lead York to Victory over CCNY

NEW YORK, N.Y. – York College seniors Jaron Williams and Omar St. John each had big nights to lead the Cardinals men's basketball team to a 79-68 road victory over the City College of New York Friday night.

Williams netted 17 points on an efficient 8-of-10 shooting and grabbed seven boards, while St. John scored a game-high 29 points and shot 60 percent from the field (12-20), while also recording seven rebounds and six steals. Cyril Reid chipped in 11 points and six boards. As a team, York (5-2, 2-0 CUNYAC) shot over 50 percent for the second straight game.

CCNY (3-4, 0-2 CUNYAC) was led by Anthony Lewis, who finished with 26 points and 11 boards, and by Khalil Hammer with 19 points.

The Beavers looked like they were in control on their home court early on, as they jumped out a 13-4 advantage right from the start.  Five straight points from Lewis capped off the run.

The lead would be short-lived, as York responded with a 15-0 run.  Reid did most of his damage during that stretch, scoring seven of his 11 points to put York up 19-13 with 11:34 remaining in the opening half.

CCNY would slowly battle back to briefly take a one-point lead, before York closed the half strong to go up by four points, 42-38, at halftime.

The Cardinals never relinquished the lead in the second half, but only led by three points with just 6:47 to go.  St. John followed with two straight buckets, and after a CCNY basket, consecutive threes by Du'Quan Lawson and St. John put York up by 11 (71-60) with 3:09 to go. That would seal the deal for the Cardinals, as they would lead by as many as 16 the rest of the way.

York will return to action on December 9 when they finally play their home opener.  The Cardinals host Lehman College at 8 p.m.
