On Tuesday, November 4th, the York College women's volleyball team will take on Hunter College on the road in the CUNY Athletic Conference Quarterfinals. Going into the tournament, York was granted the number eight seed and they are looking to write their own underdog story going against the number one seed, Hunter.
Â
The last time these two teams played each other was on September 13th, when the Hawks beat the Cardinals 3-0 (25-7, 25-15, 25-11) in a CUNYAC multi-match. The two wins for Hunter in that multi-match was the start of a perfect 8-0 record in CUNYAC play.
Â
The Cardinals will look to their two seniors,
Stayce Kay Muirhead and
NaaDira Patrick, for leadership against the best regular season foe in the CUNYAC. Muirhead and Patrick were top two on the team in kills with 208 and 135 respectively. Patrick collected 157 digs, good for third on the Cardinals, while Muirhead led the team with 71 total blocks, which also places her third in the conference in that category. Muirhead will also be looking for a York College milestone in this match, as she currently has 762 kills, just 10 kills away from setting a new school record.
Â
Hunter senior Lucia Stosic's season was amongst the best in all the conference, as she led the CUNYAC with 137 blocks and a hitting percentage of .281, while freshman Julia Connelly was second in the conference with 282 kills. This duo will be leading the Hawks into the quarterfinals game along with senior Taylor Kordich, who was second in the CUNYAC with 68 service aces on the season.
Â
To round out the rest of the CUNYAC Championships schedule, Baruch (#2) will host Staten Island (#7), Lehman (#3) will host John Jay (#6), and Brooklyn (#4) will host CCNY (#5).
Â
York will need to play efficiently and work as a team in order to get past Hunter and move onto the CUNYAC Semifinals and Finals rounds, which will be played on November 7th at Baruch College.Â
