Pratt Rallies to Top York Women’s Volleyball

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Pratt Institute broke a 1-1 tie by coming from behind in set three and controlling the fourth set from the early stages in the Cannoneers 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 25-13) win over visiting York College Thursday night at the Pratt ARC.

Pratt Middle hitter Hannah Calderwood led all players with 14 kills and a .345 attack percentage, adding 13 digs and a pair of solo blocks for her double-double. Charlotte Burch added eight kills and a team-best 14 digs. Beryl Perron-Feller chipped in with eight digs in just one set of play.  Alli Houghton handed out a match-high 29 set assists to go along with nine digs, and Abby Nagy added 12 digs.

With the opening set tied at 9-9, back-to-back Burch kills sparked an 11-3 run that put Pratt comfortably ahead 20-12. York rallied for four straight points thanks to consecutive Canneers attack errors, but Pratt held on for the 25-17 win.
It was the Cardinals that rallied in the second set when, after a Calderwood ace found the home team on top 12-7, a 10-3 run featuring a pair of Shauncia McClendon kills gave York a 17-15 lead. Still on top by two at 23-21, a Tiandra Jones ace and a Pratt attack error lifted the Cardinals to a 25-22 win.

The visitors carried their momentum into the third set, taking an 11-8 lead when McClendon and NaaDira Patrick combined to send back a Calderwood attack. But three straight Cardinals errors and a Calderwood kill started an 8-3 run that put Pratt on top for good, as back-to-back Diana Lezama aces closed the door on a 25-21 win.

After scoring 17 of the final 27 points of set three, following an early 5-5 tie, the fourth set was all Pratt. The Cannoneers ran away with nine of the last 12 points in the fourth set, with Burch, Lezama and Joan Wyeth throwing over kills in a late-game stretch that sent Pratt to a 25-13 set four win.

For York, Allison Li led all players with 17 digs, and Patrick paced the team with 12 kills and a .269 attack percentage.  McClendon, meanwhile, turned around a match-best four solo blocks, while adding seven kills and six digs.  Jones also chipped in six kills.

The Cannoneers improves to 13-2 with the win, while York drops to 4-15 in the loss.  The Cardinals will visit Albertus Magnus for a tri-match in New Haven, CT on Saturday.  York battles Albertus Magnus in the first match at 11 a.m. and then takes on Simmons College at 1 p.m.
