Men’s Basketball Pulls Away in Second Half to Top St. Joseph’s

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y.- The York College men's basketball team outscored St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) by 16 points in the second half and defeated the Bears by a score of 86-67 in a non-conference contest on Friday night.

York (12-6) got big efforts from a number of people in the victory—most notably was Jaron Williams, who recorded a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.  He also was a force at the basket, as he blocked a career-high seven shots.

Also contributing for York was Michael Woods, who had a game-high 23 points, to go along with four assists and four steals.  Omar St. John netted 20 points, with 15 coming in the second half, and Donald Rodriguez added 12 points.  Justin Garvin added six assists, four steals and seven rebounds.

York got off to a slow start offensively but was able to maintain a narrow lead for the majority of the opening half.  The Cardinals held St. Joe's to just 11 points in the fist ten minutes of action, but only held a 15-11 advantage.  St. Joseph's pulled ahead by one point, 27-26, late in the half after a lay-up by David Louison.  But York would tie the score and then go up by three-points after Michael Woods drained a three-pointer just before halftime.

The offense began to click in the second half, as the Cardinals shot an impressive 62.5 percent from the field and 54 percent from long range.  The Cardinals started the half with six unanswered to go up by nine points, after a lay-up by Donald Rodriguez

A few minutes later, York pushed its lead to 15 points, following a 7-0 run, to go up 50-35 with 13:40 remaining.   The Bears would not go quietly though as they responded with nine unanswered to close within six points.

But following a timeout, York regrouped and scored on eight of the next nine possessions to extend its lead to 71-53. From there, the Cardinals cruised to victory, leading by as many as 19 points the rest of the way.

In the loss, St. Joseph's was led by Luison, who recorded a game-high 28 points with 11 rebounds.  Michael Megafu had nine points and a game-high 16 boards. The Bears fall to 9-8 on the year.

York will return to action on Wednesday with a road game against Baruch College at 7:30 p.m.
