BOX SCORE
BRONX, N.Y.— In a key CUNY Athletic Conference match-up, the York College men's basketball team erased a 13-point first-half deficit and went on to defeat Lehman College, 84-76, to win its seventh straight game.
The win now puts York's record at 10-5 overall and 7-1 in the CUNYAC. It was an important win for the Cardinals, as Lehman was sitting in third place, just behind York College in the CUNYAC standings coming into the game. The seven-game win streak is the Cardinals longest streak since the 2009-10 season, when they won 13 consecutive games.
York looked strong out of the gate as they jumped out to a 19-12 lead at the 12:34 mark of the first half, following a made three-pointer by
Omar St. John. But the Lightning caught fire following that point, going on a 23-3 run over the next seven minutes to go up 35-22. Lehman's Jerome Jones was the catalyst for Lehman, as he scored 13 points during the stretch.
The Cardinals would regroup though and finished the half strong, closing the deficit to just two points—40-38—at halftime.
Justin Garvin and
Michael Woods each drained a shot from long range just before halftime to help close the gap.
The two teams went back and forth during the opening minutes of action until York began to pull away. The key run of the game came when the scored was tied at 54-54 with 10:52 to go. York then opened up a 10-0 run to go up 64-54. Three pointers by Woods and
Omar St. John on consecutive possessions helped spark the run.
Lehman briefly cut the lead down to six, but York followed with seven unanswered to go up by 13 points, 71-58. Lehman could not recover from there.
Woods, who was coming off a 44-point effort in his last game, which set a new school single-game record, followed up his record-breaking performance with 39 points. After shooting poorly in the first half (3-of-10), Woods stepped up his game in the second half, scoring 28 points and connecting on 9-of-13 shots. He also finished with five steals.
St. John finished with 19 points, six boards and five assists and
Jaron Williams added 10 points and nine boards.
Donald Rodriguez also chipped in ten points.
Du'Quan Lawson handed out seven assists.
Lehman was led by Jones, who finished with 27 points and 16 boards. Jonathan Greenfield added 19 points and 8 boards. Lehman drops to 9-7 overall and 4-4 with the loss.
York will return to action on Monday with a non-conference tilt against NYU-Polytechnic at 1 p.m.
