BOX SCORE
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – York College senior
Brian Broadbelt had a hand in a pair of goals—both which came on long kicks from midfield—to lead the Cardinals men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over CUNY Athletic Conference rival, Lehman College on Wednesday afternoon.
After trailing 1-0, Broadbelt got the score even thanks to a whacky goal in the 34th minute. On a free kick from midfield, Broadbelt lofted a high shot towards the keeper. The ball bounced just before the keeper and went over his head and into the net.
After halftime, the Cardinals broke the tie after being awarded a penalty kick in the 60th minute. A handball in the goalie box by Lehman resulted in
Oluwaseun Ogundele taking the PK and scoring to make it 2-1.
Broadbelt then gave the Cardinals some insurance in the 73rd minute. Once again from midfield, he lofted a long pass towards the goalie box, where he was able to find
Andre Adelson, who headed the ball into the net in an impressive-looking goal.
Lehman's goal came off a corner kick in the 25th minute. Ronniel Mendez was able to come up with the loose ball off the corner and put it in net for the early advantage.
York goalie
Leszek Stankiewicz made four stops in net, while Shady Mohammed came in for the final 11 minutes to save three shots. Lehman keeper Jesus Marin made eight saves.
With the win, York is now 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the CUNYAC. Lehman falls to 3-5 and 1-1 in the CUNYAC. The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday when they visit John Jay College at noon at Randall's Island, Field #70.
