CCNY Edges Women’s Volleyball in Five Sets

BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College women's volleyball team jumped out to a 2-1 set advantage, but the City College of New York rallied to take the match in five sets and won by a score of 3-2 (25-15, 18-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-12).

York's Carlean McCrimmon had a big night, registering 18 kills, hitting .306, with three aces, eight digs and five blocks, but her effort was wasted as the Cardinals came up a bit short.  Stayce Kay Muirhead finished with 12 kills and four blocks.  Setter Evelyn Florentino finished with 35 assists, libero Allison Li had 12 digs and middle hitter, NaaDira Patrick chipped in five total blocks.

The Cardinals appeared to have the momentum after they took the second and third sets, but CCNY was able to rebound in the fourth, pulling away late to force the deciding set.  But the fifth set was a nail biter with each team going back and forth.

A critical point in the fifth set came with CCNY up 11-10.  York was set to serve when the Beavers were awarded a point after an illegal substitution, giving them a two-point edge they would never relinquish.  CCNY would eventually get three set points (14-11).  York erased one of those points but then a service error gave the Beavers the match.

CCNY was led by Leticia Marotti, who recorded a team-high 17 kills, 14 digs and three blocks.  Joanne Ling added nine assists.  With the win, the Beavers improve to 4-4, 2-2 in the CUNYAC.

York (1-7, 1-3 CUNYAC) will host the College of St. Elizabeth on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
