Cardinals Fall to 0-4 in Overtime Matches

BOX SCORE
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The York College men's soccer team saw its tough luck in overtime continue on Wednesday, as the Cardinals lost, 2-1, to the College of Staten Island.  It was the fourth overtime loss this season, and the third to a conference opponent.

This overtime loss was especially tough for the Cardinals since the defeat means that York cannot finish higher than fifth in the CUNY Athletic Conference standings and will have to go on the road for next week's CUNYAC quarterfinal round.

With the score tied at 1-1, and just over four minutes into the first overtime, a foul in the goalie box on CSI's Mubaric Ibrahim gave the Dolphins a penalty kick. With Ibrahim injured on the play and unable to take the kick, Thomas Vasquez went to take it.  He fired a low shot to keeper's Leszek Stankiewicz right.  Stankiewicz guessed correctly and dove to his right but the shot hit off his hand and rolled into goal to set off a celebration on the Staten Island bench.

CSI got on the board first with a goal in the 34th minute when Alfonso Castanede rifled a low cross into the box and found Marcin Klim, who slid and kicked it into the net.

Things were looking bleak for York as they still trailed with 14 minutes remaining in the match. But in the 76th minute a nice pass by Huguens Smith gave Rohan Burrell a great look at the net, and he was able to get the equalizer.

Just over a minute later Burrell had another great shot on an open goal, but this time he shot it just wide.  The miscue would prove costly, with the Dolphins getting the golden goal in overtime.

Both goalies played well, making a number of key stops during regulation to force overtime. Stankiewicz finished with four saves, while CSI keeper Antonio Lynch stopped nine shots.

With the loss, York falls to 6-9-1, 3-4 in the CUNYAC, while Staten Island improves to 7-11-1, 5-3 in the CUNYAC.  The Cardinals will close out the regular season on Saturday, when they host Baruch College at 3:30 p.m. at Randall's Island, Field #44.
