BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y.— After taking the first two sets of the match, the York College women's volleyball team nearly lost the lead but held on to defeat St. Joseph's College, 3-1 (26-24, 25-12, 24-26, 27-25) in a hard-fought match on senior night.
The Cardinals squeaked out a 26-24 win the opening set and then dominated play in the second, winning 25-12. But things only got harder from there. St. Joseph's led most of the way during the third set and held a 23-20 advantage. A service error and then back-to-back kills by
Shauncia McClendon evened up the score but the Lady Bears took three of the next four points to force a fourth set.
It looked like St. Joseph's was on its way to forcing a deciding fifth set, when they jumped out to a 16-9 advantage. But the Cardinals slowly cut into the lead. Four straight points capped off by an
Evelyn Florentino service ace made it 17-15 in favor of the Lady Bears. They would eventually rally to force match point after a
Stayce Kay Muirhead kill made it 24-23 for York. The two teams would then trade points until a St. Joe's attack error and then another Muirhead kill gave the Cardinals the match.
Muirhead was dominant for York, finishing with 16 kills and five total blocks. McClendon added 13 kills and
Carlean McCrimmon had seven.
Allison Li led all players with 17 digs, while
Kiranjeet Kaur added 11 digs. Florentino, who was honored before the match in her last home contest at York, recorded 33 assists and ten digs.
The Lady Bears were led by Megan Moran with 15 kills and Lauren Ganun, who had 13.
York improves to 5-16, while St. Joseph's drops to 9-6. The Cardinals will return to action on Tuesday with a road match at Old Westbury at 6 p.m.
