Men’s Basketball Edges Lehman College
BOX SCORE
JAMAICA, N.Y. – The York College men's basketball team won a tightly contested game against Lehman College by a score of 72-70 Friday night. The Cardinals made several key buckets down the stretch to pull out the win.
The game was about as close as can be throughout. Lehman briefly held an eight-point lead in the first half but the rest of the game saw neither team hold more than a two-possession lead.
York trailed by six points (65-59) with six minutes remaining but the Cardinals rallied to tie the game at 67-67 after a
Du'Quan Lawson lay-up with 2:08 left. After a defensive stop, Lawson was fouled on York's next possession and hit one of two free throws to go up by one point.
The Cardinals came up with another defensive stop and then York's
Thomas Hart hit a clutch running jumper in the lane to put the Cardinals up by three-points (70-67) with 43 seconds to play. Lehman once again could not convert on the ensuing possession and a made free throw followed by York to extend the lead to four points with 17 ticks on the clock.
But Lehman's Kelvin Gil came up court and drained a three to cut the lead to one point with six seconds left. After York hit one free throw on the next possession, Lehman brought the ball up court trying to send the game to overtime, but
Donald Rodriguez came up with a steal for York before Lehman could get a shot attempt off.
The Cardinals had four players in double figures, led by
Tony Vails and Rodriguez who each had 16 points and seven boards. Lawson added 15 points and
Shamir Wilkinson chipped in 11 points and nine boards. Lehman was led by Gil who netted a game-high 20 points.
With the win, York improves to 8-9, 4-4 in the CUNYAC, while Lehman drops to 6-11, 1-7 in the CUNYAC. The Cardinals will host the College of Staten Island on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
