BOX SCORE
NEWARK, NJ— The York College men's soccer team got goals from
Wangchuk Dorjee and
Javed Khan but it would not be enough as Rutgers-Newark University put up four goals and topped the Cardinals by a score of 4-2 at the Rutgers-Newark Tournament Saturday afternoon.
Rutgers-Newark had a two-goal lead on three occasions and saw York cut that deficit in half the first two times. But York could never get the equalizer and a late goal by the Scarlet Raiders put the game out of reach.
RNU opened the scoring in the 17
th minute when Robi Rosario took a shot from the right side of the box and beat York goalie
Qudus Kassim. About eight minutes later, the Scarlet Raiders made it 2-0 when Nick Kypiranou scored off a free kick from 20 yards out, putting the ball just inside the right post.
But York was able to cut into the lead before the half, as
Michael Delgado scooped up a rebound for York and then found an open Dorjee, who put the ball in an empty net to make it 2-1 in the 32nd minute.
York fought hard to get the equalizer but RNU's Patryk Dawidczyk scored an unassisted goal in the 53
rd minute to put the Scarlet Raiders back up by two goals.
With time running out, the Cardinals' Khan took a shot from 17 yards out and put the ball inside the right post to make it 3-2 and give York a shot in the final seven minutes. But Rutgers-Newark put the game away just two minutes later, thanks to unassisted goal by William Munoz.
With the loss, York drops to 0-2, while Rutgers-Newark improves to 2-2. The Cardinals will wrap up the Rutgers-Newark Tournament when they take on Drew University at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
