JAMAICA, NY— The York College women's volleyball team hosted a pair of games to open the 2012 season, Wednesday evening. The Cardinals struggled in the opener, losing to St. Joseph's College (LI) 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-15) before rebounding to defeat Yeshiva University in the second match (25-19, 25-16, 25-10). With the win, new head coach Ashely Greene picks up her first collegiate victory.
The Cardinals perhaps were a bit affected by nerves in the season opener, as they struggled mightily against the Golden Eagles. The Cardinals could only muster six kills and had 18 reception errors in the contest. Meanwhile, St. Joseph's featured a balanced attack, with three players registering five kills or more and all but one player picking up at least one. Manuela Palacio led the Golden Eagles with six kills (.308)
But against Yeshiva, the Cardinals started to settle in and were much improved. They hit .232 in the match, served up 18 aces and added four blocks. York was led by sophomore middle hitter
Stayce Kay Muirhead who showed why she was a CUNYAC All-Star a year ago, as she recorded 14 kills (.435), four aces and three blocks. Sophomore middle hitter
Sharon Fordyce also performed well, picking up seven kills, while hitting .462. Sophomore middle back
NaaDira Patrick added five kills and sophomore outside hitter Anteneika Burton led the Cardinals with six digs. Junior setters
Evelyn Florentino and
Pamela Yap each picked up 12 assists apiece.
York (1-1) will return to action on Saturday when they host a conference multi-match. The Cardinals will battle conference foes Baruch College and John Jay College at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. respectively.
