Women’s Volleyball Loses Two Contests at USMMA Tri-Match

KINGS POINT, N.Y—The York College women's volleyball team fell to Montclair State University by a score of 3-0 (25-16, 25-8, 25-9) and were defeated by the United States Merchant Marine Academy 3-1 (24-26, 25-19, 25-14, 25-8) in a tri-match held at USMMA on Saturday.
 
Against Montclair State, the Cardinals were outmatched by the Red Hawks, who hit .310 on the day, while holding the Cardinals to a negative hitting percentage.  Montclair State also served up 17 aces, while allowing just two. 
 
The Red Hawks were led by Sara Girgus, who slammed nine kills and hit .571, and by Lauren Sharp, who finished with eight kills.  York's Maria Suero-Santos led the Cardinals with four kills and a .429 hitting percentage.  Allison Li had seven digs, while Pamela Yap finished with five digs and two aces.
 
Against USMMA, York got off to a fast start as they narrowly took the first set by a score of 26-24.  But USMMA took over from there, winning the next three sets by an increasingly bigger margin.  The Mariners received a match-high 11 kills from Michelle Danhof and 24 assists from Riley Huelbig. 
 
The Cardinals got a nice match from Sharon Fordyce, who finished with six kills. Li once again led the team in digs with 10.
 
York (3-12) will host SUNY Old Westbury on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.  Cardinals' head coach Ashley Greene will coach against the team she played for just a year earlier in the match-up.
